Check for hidden conditions behind your “cold intolerance”
When the cold wind blows, many people may feel shivering which is normal. But if you are someone who feels "unusually cold" compared to those around you, having to wear many layers even when others feel comfortable, this may not just be because you can't tolerate the cold. It could be an important signal that your body has some underlying abnormalities hidden within, especially problems related to metabolism, blood circulation, and nutrient deficiencies. You should be aware of these potential diseases that may accompany the symptom of "feeling unusually cold." Underlying Conditions Associated with Feeling Unusually Cold

Hypothyroidism
The thyroid gland produces too little hormone, causing the body's metabolism to slow down. Heat production is consequently reduced. This is the most common cause of chronic cold intolerance.

  • Other symptoms : Easy weight gain, fatigue, dry skin, hair loss, and constipation.
Anemia
Caused by having too few red blood cells or hemoglobin, which are responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body. When oxygen is insufficient, the body feels weak and has difficulty controlling its temperature.
  • Other symptoms : Easy fatigue even with light activity, dizziness, pale or yellowish skin, and rapid heartbeat.
Circulatory System Diseases
Blood circulation problems, such as Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) or conditions that cause blood vessels to constrict, lead to insufficient blood supply to the extremities, especially the hands and feet. This causes them to feel cold constantly.
  • Other symptoms : Numbness/tingling in hands and feet, leg pain or muscle cramps during exertion, slow healing of wounds on the legs.
Lack of Fat and Essential Nutrients
Individuals who are underweight or have low body fat lack the subcutaneous fat layer that acts as an insulator against heat, leading to easy heat loss.
  • Other symptoms : Weakness, brittle hair and nails, and irregular menstruation (in women).
Dehydration
Water is a critical medium that helps regulate and retain body temperature. When dehydrated, the body's core temperature may fluctuate.
  • Other symptoms : Dark-colored urine, dry mouth, severe thirst.
If you have chronic cold intolerance that interferes with daily life or experience any of the other symptoms mentioned above, you should not treat it merely by adding external warmth. This might be overlooking the true root cause. What you should do is consult a doctor for a detailed physical examination and blood tests to evaluate thyroid hormone levels, blood cell integrity, and other causes. Diagnosing and addressing these underlying conditions can help restore warmth and good health to you.
