How to Celebrate Loy Krathong Safely from Drowning
Loy Krathong, it doesn't matter who you float your Krathong with as much as how safely you do it. The Loy Krathong festival is a beautiful tradition inherited by Thais, but amidst the joy and excitement by the water, there are hidden risks of accidents. Mindful and cautious celebration is key to ensuring this festival is a safe night for everyone. Here are precautions and practices to prevent accidents on Loy Krathong night:
Preventing Water Accidents: "No Drunk, No Retrieving, No Leaving Children Unattended" Drowning is the most severe danger during Loy Krathong. Adhere to these simple principles for safety:
- Do not go into the water while intoxicated: Alcohol impairs consciousness and balance, greatly increasing the risk of falling and drowning.
- Supervise children closely: Never leave children near water sources alone, even for a second. Parents must hold their hands or keep them in sight at all times.
- Do not lean/go into the water to retrieve money from Krathongs: The spare change in a Krathong is not worth risking your life. Strictly avoid entering the water.
- Choose a safe location: Float Krathongs at piers or pontoons that are stable, have sturdy railings or barriers to prevent falls, and avoid standing in overcrowded areas.
- Boat Travel: If traveling by boat, check that there are enough life jackets and wear them at all times.
Preventing Dangers from Fireworks, Firecrackers, and Sky Lanterns Fireworks, firecrackers, and sky lanterns are frequent causes of injuries and fires during the festival:
- Do not play in prohibited areas: Do not set off fireworks, firecrackers, or sparklers near homes, buildings, government offices, or areas with flammable materials.
- Do not assemble/modify your own: Do not attempt to assemble or modify firecrackers to make them louder or have higher pressure, as they may explode and cause severe injury or disability.
- Avoid re-lighting: Absolutely do not try to re-light fireworks or firecrackers that failed to ignite. Wait until they are cool and dispose of them safely.
- Keep distance from high-risk spots: Maintain a safe distance (no less than 10 meters) from areas where fireworks are being set off.
Preventing Dangers from "Sky Lanterns" (in authorized areas): In many areas, setting off sky lanterns is illegal as they are a major cause of fires and disrupt air traffic. However, if you are in an authorized area:
- Inform Officials: You should notify officials in advance and strictly follow regulations.
- Choose an Open Space: Release sky lanterns in open areas, away from communities, power lines, and residential buildings.
